PORT ANGELES — By this time next week, Clallam County will offer an online auction for its surplus property.
County commissioners voted 3-0 to approve policy changes permitting the sale of vehicles, tools, law equipment and other surplus items on the county’s website, www.clallam.net.
No public comment was taken in a public hearing Tuesday at the county courthouse.
Judy Scott, Clallam County treasurer, said the online sale is intended to generate more interest in the surplus auction and reduce the growing labor costs of moving items to a sale site at the county road shop in west Port Angeles.
“We’re thinking this is a win-win situation,” Scott said.
Each surplus item will have a photo and a description of its condition and auction status, such as vehicle mileage and a minimum bid.
Surplus items will be linked from the county’s home page through the “online services” tab beginning next week.
Ten items — all vehicles — will go up for auction next Wednesday. Another batch of items will follow the initial auction.
“We’ll be doing the balance of it depending on how these first top 10 go,” Scott told the commissioners.
Clallam County declared its excess overhead as surplus after a public hearing last month.
The policy change adopted Tuesday includes a Clallam County Sheriff’s Office proposal to allow retiring officers to buy their career-issue handguns as used in a private sale.
A property control committee recommended the online move, County Administrator Jim Jones said.
Policy amendments reflect changes to state and federal regulations, Scott said.
