Longtime Port Townsend policeman given sendoff

PORT TOWNSEND — The longest-serving member of the Port Townsend Police Department received a sendoff Friday afternoon, celebrating his appointment as chief of the Oak Harbor Police Department.

“I’m excited, elated, anxious to get to work,” said Ed Green prior to cutting a commemorative cake.

“It’s a new adventure, and it’s going to be fun.”

Green’s appointment was approved by the Oak Harbor City Council last Tuesday.

His last day on the job in Port Townsend is Friday.

He will receive $101,292 per year in the chief’s role.

Members of the city and county governments, police department and several members of his family all turned out to wish Green well.

Green was not aware that the send-off was going to take place, according to colleagues.

Sgt. Troy Surber said the department plans to take Green’s old badge and patches and put them into a shadow box for display in his new office.

“I wish him the best. I think it’s a great opportunity,” Surber said.

“He’s committed; he’s dedicated. Oak Harbor is lucky to have him, and we will feel the loss here.”

Green arrived in Port Townsend in 1993, about a year before the current chief, Conner Daily, joined the department.

Daily said he will miss Green, with whom he has worked almost every day for 18 years.

“I’m very proud of him, but his leaving is a bittersweet thing,” Daily said.

“He should be a chief somewhere; he’s very good at what he does.”

Green’s first day at Oak Harbor is Oct. 29.
