Longtime Forks educator leaves Quillayute Valley board

FORKS — Quillayute Valley School Board member Sam McElravy resigned his position about 11 months before he was up for re-election.

McElravy, who was elected in 2007, told the School Board at its Jan. 27 meeting that he was stepping down immediately for “personal reasons,” said board President Brian Pederson.

He did not elaborate on those reasons at the meeting, Pederson said.

McElravy could not be reached for comment.

Prior to serving on the board, McElravy was a longtime principal for Forks Elementary Schools and a lifelong educator, Pederson said.

“Sam is very well-respected and was always in it for the kids,” Pederson said.

“He had his personal reasons for stepping down, and we accept that, but it is a loss for us as a board and as a district.”

“He is a good person and will be around but not with us on the board,” Pederson said.

Pederson said the board hopes to fill the position immediately and hopes the person who is appointed will want to run for election in November, when McElravy’s four-year term is up.

Those interested in filling the vacant seat must live within the boundaries of District 5 — the northeastern section of the school district, including Beaver and areas to Calawah Road.

Those interested can phone Carrie Micheau at 360-374-6262, ext. 267, for information on how to apply and to make sure they live within the boundaries of District 5.

A letter of interest should be sent to Micheau at the district office, 411 S. Spartan Ave.

Letters must be received by Feb. 14.
