Log truck vs. van wreck injures two, shuts Highway 112 west of Joyce

JOYCE — The second log truck highway wreck in a week in Clallam County resulted in a shutdown of state Highway 112 on Thursday afternoon and left two people injured, one seriously, State Patrol spokesman Russ Winger said.

The log truck and a Ford Econovan collided while going in opposite directions at milepost 42 west of Joyce near Stevens Pass at about 2 p.m., he said.

The male driver of the van and a passenger in the vehicle whose gender and age were unavailable were transported for treatment at an area hospital, Winger said.

Their identities, as well as that of the truck driver, and medical conditions were unavailable late Thursday afternoon.

Information on which person was seriously injured also was unavailable, Winger said.

The driver of the loaded log truck was uninjured, he said.

Winger predicted at 5 p.m. Thursday that Highway 112 might continue to be completely blocked until about 7 p.m. Thursday.

The log truck did not overturn, and its load stayed intact, but it remained in place at 5 p.m. Thursday while State Patrol conducted an investigation and cleanup personnel addressed an oil spill that resulted from the collision.

Winger said the van driver was traveling westbound on 112 and going downhill into a curve at about 2 p.m. Thursday when the driver apparently crossed the centerline “as the causing factor” and hit the left front of the eastbound log truck.

Winger said the two injured people involved in Thursday’s mishap were treated at the scene by an aid crew out of Joyce before being transported to the hospital.

In the other log truck wreck this week, log truck driver Aaron Z. Cochran, 44, died early Tuesday morning after he crossed the U.S. Highway 101 centerline at Lake Crescent, struck a guardrail and overturned.
