A surprise demonstration of Port Angeles-based Magna Force Inc.’s experimental LEVX “mag-lev” — magnetic-levitation — transportation system is scheduled before Gov. Gary Locke, legislators and the public in Olympia today.
LEVX uses a cushion of magnetic fields to move vehicles — in this case, a Chevrolet Corvette.
The sports car will be levitated a few millimeters above special guide rails with brick-size magnets providing support without contact or friction.
This allows for fast, quiet operation.
Forty feet of the guide rails was being installed Tuesday night by Jerry Lamb, a Port Angeles inventor and president of Magna Force, and his staff members on the open Capitol grounds near the sundial.
The Corvette — which is Lamb’s — will move back and forth on a cushion of magnetic fields down the track, propelled by manipulating the magnets’ attraction and repulsion.
Locke is scheduled to see the levitated Corvette between 9:10 a.m. and 9:30 a.m.
Lamb will then conduct demonstrations all day for legislators and the public.
