Local contractor wins Clallam County culvert project bid

PORT ANGELES — Clallam County has awarded a $255,988 bid to Bruch & Bruch Construction to replace the culverts on Fuhrman Road south of Forks and Marsden Road east of Port Angeles.

The Port Angeles company was the only contractor to submit a bid.

The three commissioners Tuesday awarded the bid and authorized the chairman to execute the contract with Bruch & Bruch to change out the culverts.

County Engineer Ross Tyler’s construction estimate for the two projects was $210,000 — $135,000 for the Marsden culvert and $75,000 for the Fuhrman culvert.

The county received a $40,852 grant from the U.S. Department of Fish and Wildlife Foundation Community Salmon Fund to help pay for the Fuhrman culvert replacement, with the rest coming from the county road fund.

The undersized culverts are prone to flooding and restrict fish passage. Tyler said the Marsden culvert has begun to damage the road.

The new culverts will have a 10-foot diameter.

Work is expected to begin in August.

Chairman Mike Doherty asked Tyler if he had any ideas why there was just one bid.

“They’re just busy right now,” Tyler said.

“That’s kind of what happens during this time of the year. That’s why we like to get the bids out earlier in the year if we can.”

In other board action, commissioners appointed Community Development Director Sheila Roark Miller to the Clallam County Noxious Weed Control Board and adjusted Jane Vanderhoof’s term on the same board to expire in July 2013.
