LIVE MUSIC COLUMN: Turn it upbeat with rockin’ rhythms on Peninsula

VARIETY IS THE spice of life, and there is plenty of musical variety to flavor your January weekend across the Peninsula.

Port Angeles

■ Today at Castaways Restaurant and Night Club, 1213 Marine Drive, it’s Jerry’s country jam with guest band High Country from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. The monthlong musical talent show continues.

■ Today at Bar N9NE, 229 W. First St., the open mic starts at 9 p.m.

On Friday, DJ RoBoTiX takes you ’round the turntable from 9 p.m.

On Saturday, Amongst the Trees plays reggae at 9 p.m. $3 cover.

■ On Friday at Barhop Brewing, 124 W. Railroad Ave., the Soul Ducks play hoppin’ rockabilly and jumpin’ blues from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m.

■ On Friday at The Metta Room, 132 E. Front St., Hip Hop for Hunger brings together local and regional DJs to benefit the food bank at 7 p.m. All ages can come and dance to L3FTY & STK, Scott Elkins, KP Tha 1, Lost Angels, Ryan & Dallas and Zak Swift. Cover is $7, $5 with a nonperishable food item. A 21-and-older after-party with DJ O.B.1 starts at 10 p.m.

On Saturday, DJ Esteban spins a variety from 9 p.m.

■ On Friday at the Fairmount Restaurant, 1127 W. U.S. Highway 101, there’s a jam session from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m., followed by Serendipity Band with special guest Terry Roszatycki until 8 p.m.

On Sundays, join the open mic with Vienna and Dottie from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

■ Every Friday at the Lazy Moon Craft Tavern, 130 S. Lincoln St., Dan Maguire plays his original folk/Americana songs from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

On Tuesdays, Doug Parent plays his acoustic Americana from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

On Wednesdays, Ches Ferguson & Friends perform classic rock with a few originals thrown in from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m.

■ On Friday at The Dam Bar, junction of U.S. Highway 101 and state Highway 112, Gordon Bowlby hosts a jam session from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m.

■ On Friday at the Port Angeles Eagles Lodge, 2843 E. Myrtle St., Jim Hoffman and his band play a variety of classic rock and country for the public to dance to from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m.

■ On Tuesdays at the Port Angeles Senior Center, 328 E. Seventh St., Wally’s Boys play jazz dance favorites from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. $5 cover; first-timers free.

■ On Wednesday at Cafe New Day, 102 W. Front St., Gerald Braude performs his acoustic fingerstyle jazz from 11 a.m. to noon.

West End

■ On Friday at the Sekiu Community Center, 42 Rice St., Dave and Rosalie Secord play bluegrass favorites for a community potluck from 11 a.m. to noon.

Sequim

■ Today at Wind Rose Cellars, 143 W. Washington St., Cort Armstrong and friends present a musical showcase from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

On Friday, Rufus & the Blue Hares play blues and rock from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

On Saturday, the Chuck Easton Trio brings originals in jazz from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

On Wednesday, Bill Volmut entertains with folk and rock tunes from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

■ On Saturday at the Sequim VFW, 169 E. Washington St., Silver and Gold plays live classic tunes for the public to dance to from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

■ On Sunday at the Holiday Inn Express, 1441 W. Washington St., Gil Yslas plays an original acoustic variety show from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. It’s free and family-friendly.

Blyn

■ Today in Club Seven lounge at 7 Cedars Casino, 270756 U.S. Highway 101, dance to the country blues of Sammy Eubanks from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.

On Friday, Eubanks is back for more blues from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m.

On Saturday, it’s a DJ dance party (GLOW 5) with DJ O.B.1, plus two Seattle guest DJs and dancing girls, from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. Sport your neon clubwear.

On Friday in the Rainforest Bar, you can listen or dance to new and old Top 40s and more with the Langley Connection duo from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.

On Saturday, Justin Kausal-Hayes puts on an upbeat acoustic show with music of the ages from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.

■ On Wednesday at Nourish, 1345 S. Sequim Ave., Victor Reventlow hosts the open mic from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., with sign-ups at 6 p.m.

Port Ludlow

■ Today in the Fireside Room at the Resort at Port Ludlow, 1 Heron Road, Trevor Hanson plays classical guitar from 5 p.m. to closing.

Port Townsend

■ Today at the Cellar Door, 940 Water St., it’s the local DJ of the night starting at 9 p.m.

On Friday, Cabana brings the heat and energy of its playful style from Seattle to warm everyone up at 9 p.m. $5 cover.

On Saturday, The Solvents duo returns with its original wide-range style for an 8:30 p.m. show. $5 cover.

On Tuesdays, join the weekly jazz night from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. This week, Rex Rice and Friends play the free event.

■ Every Thursday, The Boiler Room, 711 Water St., host an all-ages open mic at 8 p.m., with sign-ups at 7 p.m.

■ On Friday at Sirens, 823 Water St., Megan Trenary and special guests play indie, folk and blues at 9 p.m. $5 cover.

On Saturday, Crow Quill Night Owls start at 9 p.m. by playing jug band, jazz and string stuff of the ’20s and ’30s to keep you awake. $5 cover.

On Tuesdays, there’s a fiddler jam session starting at 7 p.m.

On Wednesdays, join the open mic starting at 9 p.m.

■ On Friday at the Uptown Pub, 1016 Lawrence St., Jack & Joe offer up their version of Americana-cowboy and “BlueBilly Swing” music from 9 p.m. to 11:30 p.m.

On Saturday, DJ Thay spins danceable hits at 9 p.m.

On Tuesdays, join in on an open mic with Jarrod Bramson at 9 p.m.

■ On Saturday at the Pourhouse, 2231 Washington St., The Blackberry Bushes hop over from Seattle to play bluegrass and Americana from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.

■ Every Saturday at Snug Harbor Cafe, 281732 U.S. Highway 101, Skeeter Ezell plays covers of Roy Orbison and the like from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

■ On Saturday at the Public House Grill, 1038 Water St., Sam Amazyan plays original compositions inspired by nature from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

■ Every Monday at Alchemy, 842 Washington St., Trevor Hanson plays guitar from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.

High notes

■ On Friday at the Port Townsend Elks Lodge, 555 Otto St., the Olympic Peninsula Dance Club presents local legends The Delta Rays (Peter Evasick on vocals, guitar and fiddle; George Radebaugh on keyboard and accordion; Peter Bliven on drums; and Hugh Starks on bass), with zydeco, Irish fiddle, rhythm and blues for dancing from 8 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.

A $10 cover also includes a single-time swing dance lesson with Janice Eklund from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.

This is a smoke-free and scent-free facility; no partner or experience necessary.

■ On Friday at Lake Crescent Lodge, 416 Lake Crescent Road west of Port Angeles, a benefit for Diane Schostak of Forks features the band Loose Gravel, along with a silent auction, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Admission is $40 at the door.

Proceeds from “A Night with Diane” go toward Schostak’s medical expenses.

■ On Friday and Saturday at Lanza’s Ristorante, 1020 Lawrence St., Port Townsend, vocalist Robin Bessier and pianist Linda Dowdell bring a kaleidoscope of contemporary, standard and original jazz, heavy on the bossas and sambas, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Reservations are recommended via 360-379-1900.

■ On Saturday at the Quimper Grange, 1219 Corona St., Port Townsend, it’s the PT Cruisers playing country tunes for square dancing, with calling by Jo Yount, from 7:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.

Admission is $6, $3 for those 3 to 18 and free for those younger than 3.

■ On Sunday at the Laurel B. Johnson Community Center, 923 Hazel Point Road, Coyle, the Blackberry Bushes bring high-energy, soulful string music for all ages at 3:30 p.m., with doors opening at 3 p.m.
