LIVE MUSIC COLUMN: Tune out dour day with rockin’ rhythms on Peninsula

HOT BLUES FOR a warm January, along with plenty of classic tunes and more, makes it a weekend of variety here in the Northwest.

Port Angeles

■ Today at Castaways Restaurant and Night Club, 1213 Marine Drive, it’s Jerry’s musical jam with guest singer Les Wamboldt from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. This is the last Thursday for this month’s talent show.

■ Today at Bar N9NE, 229 W. First St., the open mic starts at 9 p.m.

On Friday, DJ RoBoTiX spins the hits at 9 p.m.

On Saturday, DJ Lumpy turns your favorites at 9 p.m.

■ On Friday at The Metta Room, 132 E. Front St., Inside Defiance plays a benefit show with Estafets, Jack Havoc and Trinity Avenue. The benefit is for Static Illusion, which lost all of its equipment and practice space in a fire. Admission is $5, and the all-ages show starts at 6 p.m.

On Saturday, dance to the country tunes of the Hayshakers at 9 p.m. $3 cover.

■ On Friday at Barhop Brewing, 124 W. Railroad Ave., Top Shelf with Bill Tiderman, guitar and vocals; Rudy Maxion, bass, guitar and vocals; Steve Koehler, lead guitar and vocals; and Ron Casey, drums, is playing a variety of classic rock favorites from the ’60s through ’80s for dancing from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m.

■ On Friday at the Fairmount Restaurant, 1127 W. U.S. Highway 101, there’s a jam session from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m., followed by Serendipity with special guest Chuck Grall until 8 p.m. The evening will close with a country sing-along.

On Sundays, join the open mic with Vienna and Dottie from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

■ On Friday at the Lazy Moon Craft Tavern, 130 S. Lincoln St., Craig Buhler plays jazz at 7:30 p.m., followed by special guest Kenny Lofstrom from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

On Wednesdays, Ches Ferguson & Friends perform classic rock with a few originals thrown in from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m.

■ On Friday at The Dam Bar, junction of U.S. Highway 101 and state Highway 112, Gordon Bowlby hosts a jam session from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m.

■ On Tuesdays at the Port Angeles Senior Center, 328 E. Seventh St., Wally’s Boys play jazz dance favorites from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. $5 cover; first-timers free.

Sequim

■ Today at Wind Rose Cellars, 143 W. Washington St., Cort Armstrong and Friends entertain from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

On Friday, Me and the Boys, with Rick Meade, Roger Ferguson, Terry Enyeart and Mick Nicholson, plays bluegrass and more from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

On Saturday, Tony Petrillo on guitar and vocals with Dirk Anderson on bass and Jim Oliver on guitar brews up a mix of jazz, swing, Latin, blues and some novelty tunes from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

■ On Saturday at the Sequim VFW, 169 E. Washington St., Still Kickin’ plays country for the public to dance to from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. No cover.

■ On Sunday at the Holiday Inn Express, 1441 W. Washington St., Gil Yslas plays original acoustic variety from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Free and family-friendly.

Blyn

■ Today in Club Seven lounge at 7 Cedars Casino, 270756 U.S. Highway 101, dance to the hits of the ’40s with the Stardust Big Band from 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

On Friday, DJ Bizzle spins hits for Blacklite Bingo with fun games and prizes from 9 p.m. to midnight.

On Saturday, Billy Shew plays classics, contemporary and blues from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Then, Hell’s Belles, an all-female AC/DC tribute band, plays hits from 10 p.m. to 11:30 p.m.

On Friday in the Rainforest Bar, listen to folk and country Americana with Jason Mogi from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.

On Saturday, DJ O.B.1 spins from 8 p.m. to midnight in the Rainforest Bar.

■ On Wednesday at Nourish, 1345 S. Sequim Ave., Victor Reventlow hosts the open mic from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., with sign-ups at 6 p.m.

Port Ludlow

■ Today in the Fireside Room at the Resort at Port Ludlow, 1 Heron Road, Trevor Hanson plays classical guitar from 5 p.m. to closing.

Port Townsend

■ Today at the Cellar Door, 940 Water St., check out this week’s local DJ starting at 9 p.m.

On Friday, the Nooksack River Delta’s own Moongrass, with Elijah Watson, Taylor Merlina, Cole Melcher, Tom McKay, Austin Bowen and Willie Reavis, brings its special blues, punk, rock and grass from under the howlin’ moon to the stage at 9 p.m. $5 cover.

On Saturday, it’s time again for the Gong Show. $3 admission.

On Tuesdays, join the weekly jazz night from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. This week, Selah Martha Group plays the free event.

■ Every Thursday, The Boiler Room, 711 Water St., host an all-ages open mic at 8 p.m., with sign-ups at 7 p.m.

■ On Friday at the Uptown Pub & Grill, 1016 Lawrence St., local singer-songwriter Sam Maynard presents his originals and covers starting at 9 p.m.

On Saturday, One Egg Night plays rock ’n’ roll from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m.

On Tuesdays, join in on an open mic with Jarrod Bramson at 9 p.m.

■ On Friday at Sirens, 823 Water St., Alki Jones, a Seattle rock trio, makes its first appearance and presents its single “Whole Lotta Lonely,” a mix of acoustic, country and progressive tunes. The group plays two sets, at 9:30 p.m. and 11 p.m. $5 cover; $4 if bringing a can of food (peanut butter, fish, other proteins) for the Port Townsend Food Bank.

On Tuesdays, there’s a fiddler jam session starting at 7 p.m.

On Wednesdays, join the open mic starting at 9 p.m.

■ On Saturday at the Pourhouse, 2231 Washington St., Hot Club Sandwich performs sultry Gypsy jazz from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m.

■ On Saturday at the Public House Grill, 1038 Water St., Sam Amazyan plays original compositions inspired by nature from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

■ Every Monday at Alchemy, 842 Washington St., Trevor Hanson plays guitar from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.

■ On Wednesday at the Highway 20 Roadhouse Cafe, 2152 W. Sims Road, Ukuleles Unite meets from 5:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. to host the monthly open mic.

Discovery Bay

■ Every Saturday at Snug Harbor Cafe, 281732 U.S. Highway 101, Skeeter Ezell plays covers of Roy Orbison and the like from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

High notes

■ On Monday in the Port Angeles High School auditorium, 304 E. Park Ave., Metales M5, a brass quintet from Mexico, plays fine music with wit and charm from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Tickets are $10 (back, section B) to $15 (front, section A) and can be purchased at Field Notes in Sequim, Port Book & News and Strait Music in Port Angeles, and Chinook Pharmacy in Forks.

Remaining tickets will be available at the door prior to the performance.
