LIVE MUSIC COLUMN: Elude post-holiday blues with musical mix [corrected]

Corrects the day Dance Port Townsend hosts a dance at the Masonic Lodge in Port Townsend.

TO START THIS new year off right, read on to find a wide variety of musical events to shake off any post-holiday blues and amp up those resolutions.

Port Angeles

■ Today at Castaways Restaurant and Night Club, 1213 Marine Drive, it’s Jerry’s country jam with guest band High Country from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

A talent contest also will kick off tonight after the jam. Musical talent is welcome every Thursday through Jan. 29 to hop on stage and perform for a weekly prize. Four finalists will then compete for a grand prize in a sing-off Feb. 5.

■ Today at Bar N9NE, 229 W. First St., the open mic starts at 9 p.m.

On Friday, local singer Scott Sullivan and his melodic band accompany local artist Sarah Tucker at Second Friday Art Rock for a dancing good time from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. $3 cover.

On Saturday, Amongst the Trees, a “melodic hardcore” band, gets the party going at 9 p.m. $3 cover.

■ On Friday at The Metta Room, 132 E. Front St., DJ Bizzle spins favorites for the crowd from 9 p.m.

■ On Friday, Dave Secord is celebrating 14 years of playing live music at the Fairmount Restaurant, 1127 U.S. Highway 101, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. After the open mic from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m., Luck of the Draw will play with guest performers Jim Lind on guitar and vocals and Peter Larsen on blues harp.

On Sundays, join the open mic with Vienna and Dottie from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

■ Every Friday at the Lazy Moon Craft Tavern, 130 S. Lincoln St., Dan Maguire plays his original folk/Americana songs from 7:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., followed by a special guest. This week, Bread and Gravy (Jess and Stephanie Doenges) play from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m.

On Tuesdays, Doug Parent plays his acoustic Americana from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

On Wednesdays, Ches Ferguson & Friends perform classic rock with a few originals thrown in from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m.

■ On Friday at The Dam Bar, junction of U.S. Highway 101 and state Highway 112, Gordon Bowlby hosts a jam session from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m.

■ On Friday at the Coo Coo Nest, 1017 E. First St., Mos Generator and Northern Bastard rock the rafters with soul and doom beats from 9 p.m.

■ On Tuesdays at the Port Angeles Senior Center, 328 E. Seventh St., Wally’s Boys play ballroom dance favorites from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. $5 cover; first-timers free.

Sequim

■ Today at Wind Rose Cellars, 143 W. Washington St., Getta Rogers and Bob Lawrence join Cort Armstrong for an evening of folk and Americana from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

On Friday, Jesse Ahmann and Taylor Ackley bring a unique jazz sound for a mellow night from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

On Saturday, Lush Life Jazz with Trevor Hanson, Jim Rosand and Joey Lazzaro brings their jazz originals from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

On Wednesday, Bill Volmut offers up acoustic rock and folk from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

■ On Friday at Stymie’s Bar and Grill at the Cedars at Dungeness, 1965 Woodcock Road, Dos Locos with Kevin Lee Magner and Scott Bradley sings eclectic and classic covers and originals starting at 6 p.m.

■ On Saturday, the Sequim Prairie Grange, 290 Macleay Road, presents the Washington Old Time Fiddlers Association and its all-ages show of bluegrass, country and gospel from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

■ On Saturday at the Sequim VFW, 169 E. Washington St., High Country plays rockin’ country for the public to dance to from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. No cover.

■ On Saturday at Blondie’s Plate, 134 S. Second Ave., “Blondie’s Birthday Bash” with Joy in Mudville starts at 7:30 p.m. Reservations are recommended via 360-683-2233.

■ On Sunday at the Shipley Center, 921 E. Hammond St., Round Trip, a trio with Jim Noble and Rodger Bigelow of Sequim and Dee Coburn of Port Angeles, plays a variety mix of popular standards for dancers from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Open to the public. Admission is $4 for members and $5 for nonmembers.

■ On Wednesday at Nourish, 1345 S. Sequim Ave., Victor Reventlow hosts the open mic from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., with sign-ups at 6 p.m.

Blyn

■ Today in Club Seven lounge at 7 Cedars Casino, 270756 U.S. Highway 101, dance to Buck Ellard’s cool country from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.

On Friday, the M-80s play music favorites from the ’80s for dancing from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m.

On Saturday, Notorious 253 plays top tunes for dancing from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m.

On Friday in the Rainforest Bar, listen to the folk, Americana and grass-roots entertainment of Jason Mogi from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Port Ludlow

■ Today in the Fireside Room at the Resort at Port Ludlow, 1 Heron Road, Trevor Hanson plays classical guitar from 5 p.m. to closing.

Port Townsend

■ Today at the Cellar Door, 940 Water St., come check out the local DJ of the week starting at 9 p.m.

On Friday, Lowire plays multilayered funk rock for dancing at 9:30 p.m. $5 cover.

On Saturday, Estafets, Jerkagram and Dr. Light present a medley of post-punk and hardcore sounds at 9 p.m. $3 cover.

On Tuesdays, join the weekly jazz night from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. This week, Blue Crows play the free event.

■ Every Thursday, The Boiler Room, 711 Water St., host an all-ages open mic at 8 p.m., with sign-ups at 7 p.m.

■ On Friday at the Uptown Pub, 1016 Lawrence St., Matney Cook plays plenty of honky-tonk and bluesy jams starting at 9 p.m.

On Saturday, Matt Sircely & Friends provide a variety of folk and bluegrass at 9 p.m.

On Tuesdays, join an open mic with Jarrod Bramson at 9 p.m.

■ On Saturday at the Pourhouse, 2231 Washington St., The Reverie Machine performs rock, soul and R&B from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.

■ On Saturday at the Public House Grill, 1038 Water St., Sam Amazyan plays original compositions inspired by nature from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

■ Every Saturday at Snug Harbor Cafe, 281732 U.S. Highway 101, Skeeter Ezell plays covers of Roy Orbison and the like from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

■ Every Monday at Alchemy, 842 Washington St., Trevor Hanson plays guitar from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.

■ On Tuesdays at Sirens Pub, 823 Water St., there’s a fiddler jam session at 7 p.m.

On Wednesdays, join the open mic starting at 9 p.m.

High notes

■ On Friday at the Port Angeles Library’s Art Blast, 2210 S. Peabody St., the Robin Bessier Band delivers Latin, swing and blues at 7 p.m.

Vocalist Bessier is accompanied by George Radebaugh, keyboard; Ted Enderle, bass; Tom Svornich, drums; and Kurt Festinger, sax, clarinet and flute.

The event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be offered.

■ On Saturday at the Quimper Grange, 1219 Corona St., Port Townsend, it’s a “breakin’ up Christmas” square dance and social, a southern Appalachian tradition.

Joanne Pontrello will call traditional Appalachian squares with Dave Thielk on fiddle, Carol Hardy on guitar and Chris Cooper on banjo.

Dancing starts at 7:30 p.m. and goes until about 11 p.m. All ages and experience levels are welcome; partners not necessary.

Admission is by donation.

■ On Saturday at the Masonic Lodge, 1338 Jefferson St., Port Townsend, Dance Port Townsend hosts a dance with DJ Janice Eklund from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

There is a pre-dance lesson followed by music for waltz, two-step, Latin, swing, foxtrot, zydeco and more. Everyone is welcome; no partners necessary.

The facility is smoke- and scent-free. Admission is $10.

■ On Sunday at the Rosewind Common House, 3131 Haines St., Port Townsend, the monthly English Country Dance is from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., followed by a potluck. There’s a $5 suggested donation with a potluck offering.

Nan Evans will teach dancing to the music of Rosewind Country Dance Band.

The facility is fragrance-free; no street shoes are allowed, just dance shoes or slippers.
