TO START THIS new year off right, read on to find a wide variety of musical events to shake off any post-holiday blues and amp up those resolutions.
Port Angeles
■ Today at Castaways Restaurant and Night Club, 1213 Marine Drive, it’s Jerry’s country jam with guest band High Country from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
A talent contest also will kick off tonight after the jam. Musical talent is welcome every Thursday through Jan. 29 to hop on stage and perform for a weekly prize. Four finalists will then compete for a grand prize in a sing-off Feb. 5.
■ Today at Bar N9NE, 229 W. First St., the open mic starts at 9 p.m.
On Friday, local singer Scott Sullivan and his melodic band accompany local artist Sarah Tucker at Second Friday Art Rock for a dancing good time from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. $3 cover.
On Saturday, Amongst the Trees, a “melodic hardcore” band, gets the party going at 9 p.m. $3 cover.
■ On Friday at The Metta Room, 132 E. Front St., DJ Bizzle spins favorites for the crowd from 9 p.m.
■ On Friday, Dave Secord is celebrating 14 years of playing live music at the Fairmount Restaurant, 1127 U.S. Highway 101, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. After the open mic from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m., Luck of the Draw will play with guest performers Jim Lind on guitar and vocals and Peter Larsen on blues harp.
On Sundays, join the open mic with Vienna and Dottie from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
■ Every Friday at the Lazy Moon Craft Tavern, 130 S. Lincoln St., Dan Maguire plays his original folk/Americana songs from 7:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., followed by a special guest. This week, Bread and Gravy (Jess and Stephanie Doenges) play from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m.
On Tuesdays, Doug Parent plays his acoustic Americana from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
On Wednesdays, Ches Ferguson & Friends perform classic rock with a few originals thrown in from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m.
■ On Friday at The Dam Bar, junction of U.S. Highway 101 and state Highway 112, Gordon Bowlby hosts a jam session from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m.
■ On Friday at the Coo Coo Nest, 1017 E. First St., Mos Generator and Northern Bastard rock the rafters with soul and doom beats from 9 p.m.
■ On Tuesdays at the Port Angeles Senior Center, 328 E. Seventh St., Wally’s Boys play ballroom dance favorites from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. $5 cover; first-timers free.

High notes
■ On Friday at the Port Angeles Library’s Art Blast, 2210 S. Peabody St., the Robin Bessier Band delivers Latin, swing and blues at 7 p.m.
Vocalist Bessier is accompanied by George Radebaugh, keyboard; Ted Enderle, bass; Tom Svornich, drums; and Kurt Festinger, sax, clarinet and flute.
The event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be offered.
■ On Saturday at the Quimper Grange, 1219 Corona St., Port Townsend, it’s a “breakin’ up Christmas” square dance and social, a southern Appalachian tradition.
Joanne Pontrello will call traditional Appalachian squares with Dave Thielk on fiddle, Carol Hardy on guitar and Chris Cooper on banjo.
Dancing starts at 7:30 p.m. and goes until about 11 p.m. All ages and experience levels are welcome; partners not necessary.

■ On Saturday at the Masonic Lodge, 1338 Jefferson St., Port Townsend, Dance Port Townsend hosts a dance with DJ Janice Eklund from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
There is a pre-dance lesson followed by music for waltz, two-step, Latin, swing, foxtrot, zydeco and more. Everyone is welcome; no partners necessary.
The facility is smoke- and scent-free. Admission is $10.
