OLYMPIC NATIONAL PARK — A wave of unsettled weather brought thunder and lightning — and about a dozen small fires — across the North Olympic Peninsula on Sunday.
All but one of the reported fires were in Olympic National Park, and the largest forced the evacuation of campers.
But most of the fires were limited to one or two trees, Olympic National Park spokeswoman Barb Maynes said.
Four Olympic National Park firefighting crews responded to the largest fire, which consumed a small area near Deer Park campground and ranger station southeast of Port Angeles.
“That one was near campgrounds so we did send some people up to work on it,” Maynes said.
Most of the fires were away from populated areas and were of little danger of spreading, so they were allowed to burn.
