League of Women Voters, libraries to host Peninsula candidate forums

EDITOR’S NOTE: The names of those opposing Port Angeles City Council member Navarra Carr in the primary election have been corrected.

The Clallam County League of Women Voters and the North Olympic Library System plan two primary election forums this month.

The first will be from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Thursday and will focus on the three primary contested races for the Sequim School Board. It will be at 5:30 p.m. on Zoom at https://us06web.zoom.us/j/82094793980?pwd=eWZFbzdtd1NidDJwQm5pbnM1aTRUQT09.

The second will be from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. July 13 for the primary contested race for the Port Angeles City Council. It will be on Zoom at https://us06web.zoom.us/j/82321197083?pwd=QVIxcmQ4bExZVC9VaXhBeFpzSmN2UT09.

Community members and organizations are encouraged to submit questions to info@lwvcla.org or mail them to: League of Women Voters of Clallam County, PO Box 1092, Carlsborg, WA 98324.

Preference will be given to questions received within three days prior to the forum.

When submitting questions, advise in which city or county you are registered to vote, and at which forum to have the question asked.

In the Sequim School Board races, incumbent Larry Jeffryes is challenged for the four-year Position 1 seat by Jim Shepherd and John Graham; appointee Maren Halvorsen, Derek Huntington and Dean Christian seek the Position 4 seat’s two-year unexpired term; and appointee Michael Rocha, Hunter Graham and Sandra Kellso seek the two-year unexpired term of Position 5.

In the Port Angeles City Council race, incumbent Navarra Carr is opposed by Mark Karjalainen and Nicolas Merriganfor the four-year Position No. 6 seat.

About the forums

At each forum, participating candidates will be invited to provide their qualifications, state why they are running and state their goals for the office, if elected, forum organizers said.

The forum moderator will then pose questions that have been provided by the public.

A link to the recorded forums will be uploaded to lwvcla.clubexpress.com/forums.
