PORT TOWNSEND — The Jefferson County Fair begins today, offering three days of 4-H shows and exhibits, music and special events such as a lawnmower demolition derby and mud drags.
Gates will open at 8 a.m. for ticket sales into the Jefferson County Fairgrounds at 4907 Landes St. Buildings and grounds will open to the public each day at 10 a.m. with a 4-H horse color guard and the national anthem.
The fair will close at 9 tonight and Saturday night, and at 6 p.m. Sunday.
Ticket prices are $8 for adults 18 to 64; $6 for seniors 65 and older and students form 13 to 17; and $2 for children 6 to 12.
Children 5 and younger will be admitted free. All active-duty service members and their families will, with valid I.D., receive a $1 military discount. Payments can be made only by cash or check; an ATM will be located near the fair office.
Single day pre-sale tickets are $5. They are available only at the Jefferson County Fair Office.
The fair also offers three-day “Season Tickets” which include the admission for the annual beef barbecue Sunday, for $17 at the gate or $15 if bought in advance.
The “Everybody’s Welcome Parade” through the fairgrounds will be led by the Unexpected Brass Band, starting at the small stage at 11 a.m. Saturday.
At 11:30 p.m. Saturday will be Lawnmower Football at the main stage, followed by a $10 salmon barbecue in the picnic area from noon to 3 p.m.
After a full day of events, the Lawnmower Demolition Derby is set for 7 p.m. Saturday at the main stage.
On Sunday, the annual mud drags are scheduled for 11 a.m.
At 11:30 a.m., beef barbecue will be served for $8 a plate at the picnic area.
