Law enforcement agencies to participate in Torch Run

PORT ANGELES — Clallam County law enforcement agencies will participate in the Special Olympics Torch Run today.

The event will begin at 7 a.m. at the Laird Road Park and Ride with officers and community members running the torch through Port Angeles to Hollywood Beach. There, they will be joined by Special Olympics athletes, Sheriff Brian King and Port Angeles Police Chief Brian Smith for a meet-and-greet event.

The run will continue east along the Olympic Discovery Trial, supported by the Clallam County Sheriff’s Office bike patrol and search and rescue team.

About 1 p.m., the runners will pause at the intersection of North Rhodefer Road and West Sequim Bay Road, where athletes will have an opportunity to meet Sequim Police Chief Mike Hill.

The final leg of the run will lead to the 7 Cedars Casino, with runners expected to arrive between 2 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.

The event will conclude from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. with a community celebration in the southeast RV parking lot of the casino.

The post-run celebration will feature a variety of family-friendly activities, including free hot air balloon rides from Captain-Chrystal Stout, the Strait Foam obstacle course, a dunk tank featuring King, Smith and Hill, and the Clallam County armored rescue vehicle on display with members of the crisis response team available for questions.

Participating law enforcement and public safety agencies include the Clallam County Sheriff’s Office, Port Angeles Police Department, Sequim Police Department, state Department of Corrections, Clallam County Juvenile Corrections, Washington State Parks, Jamestown S’Klallam Tribe, National Park Service, Lower Elwha Tribal Police, Clallam County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office, Peninsula Communications, Olympic National Forest and Jamestown Fish and Game.

Special Olympics Torch Run T-shirts and hoodies will be available for purchase. All proceeds will benefit Special Olympics Washington, helping to support athletes will intellectual disabilities statewide.

As of Monday, Clallam County had raised more than $4,000 through online donations and apparel sales, including a $1,000 donation from Jamestown S’Klallam Tribe.
