PORT ANGELES — Lake Sutherland voters have approved formation of a management district, enabling them to pay for eradication efforts toward a non-native water weed through an annual assessment of $50 per parcel.
With 234 of 368 eligible property owners voting, the lake management district was approved 132-102, a 63.6 percent margin of victory.
The vote means the assessment will begin in 2005 to fund fighting Eurasian watermilfoil, which has threatened parts of the lake community about 15 miles west of Port Angeles.
All-mail voting ended Friday, and ballots were counted Monday at the county courthouse by Auditor’s Office Chief Accountant Stan Creasey, Clerk of the Board Trish Perrott and County Administrator Dan Engelbertson.
With vote counting open to the public, county noxious-weed coordinator Cathy Lucero attended as an observer.
“We’ve got our work cut out for us,” a smiling Lucero said after the vote count.
“I’m happy that people saw the work that has been done.”
