LAKE SUTHERLAND — Jane Childers and Diane Holth were just young Girl Scouts when they first paddled canoes on the lake, sang in the rain and slept under the dark star-glittered dome of night at Fisher Cove Camp.
That was 1964.
Today, they are doing much of the same at the Girl Scouts camp that hugs the western shore of Lake Sutherland.
The only difference is age and wisdom, the latter of which they’re passing along to schoolgirls decades later.
“It’s meant to be here for local kids,” Jane Childers, Port Angeles Girl Scouts Troop 648 leader, said Sunday as she read the flagpole monument that lists the camp’s original board of trustees.
Today, Margaret Hassel remains as the only original board member. She is now joined by board chairman Randy Smith, and members Tim Holth, Mike Todd, Jan Snyder, Margaret Wilcox, Jim Ervin Val Hilden, Carl Gay, Steve Zenovich and Childers.
Childers, Diane Holth, along with Holth’s 21-year-old Girl Scout daughter, Janice, were all marking the 13-acre camp’s 40th anniversary on Sunday.
