SEQUIM — David Groves, Washington State Labor Council spokesman, will be the featured speaker at the Clallam County Democratic Club on Wednesday, Feb. 9.
Groves will present “Ask a Big Labor Boss” at 7 p.m. at Pioneer Park in Sequim.
The club’s meetings, which are on the second Wednesday of each month, are open to the public.
Groves designs and edits the labor council’s publications, including “WSLC Reports Today,” the organization’s daily newsletter, and the website, www.wslc.org.
The labor council represents some 400,000 rank-and-file union members across the state.
Club program chair Pat Johansen “discovered” Groves while checking out the group’s newsletter.
“It was clear that this man had a real grasp of Washington state’s political life,” she said.
“More important, his writings showed a subtle irony and sense of humor that we need in these tough times.”
Groves joined the labor council in 1992 after working for five years in the newspaper business at the Carroll County (Md.) Times and the (Norfolk) Virginian-Pilot.
A journalism graduate of the University of Maryland, Groves lives with his family on Bainbridge Island.
He has ties to Clallam County, Johansen said. His mother-in-law, Cynthia Martin, is founder of the local First Teacher program and is executive director of the Parenting Matters Foundation.
This presentation will be the first in an occasional series focusing on “Progressive Partners,” said Democratic Club President Bill Lowman.
“We need to better understand our allies in the important task of standing up for Democratic principles, civil rights and the survival of the middle class,” Lowman said.
Future speakers will include representatives of sympathetic activist groups and women’s organizations.
