Kinetic Skulpture Race replaced with virtual contests

PORT TOWNSEND — The Great Port Townsend Bay Kinetic Sculpture Race has canceled all festivities this year.

The annual celebration of the strange, the weird and the homemade would have been held in October with a Kinetic Sculpture Race, RoseHips Kostume Ball and other activities.

“We recognize that while our kinetic race is run outside in gorgeous Pacific Northwest weather and our pilots are always well distanced, our glorious specktators and racers might be at risk of catching cooties,” organizers said on their Facebook page on Saturday.

Rachel Cervantes, the Rosehips Kween Pearlificient, will continue to reign until Oct. 2, 2021.

In the meantime, organizers have come up with three virtual contests, saying entries will be posted to the Facebook page.

• A cooking film, demonstrating a recipe for the Top Chef Kook-Off.

“Think of a “Julia Child” or Swedish Chef recipe presentation… the more hilarity the better. Full Kinetic kostumes are encouraged.”

• A photo a dressed-up Teddy Bear.

“Extra points for best use of this year’s theme – A Kinetic Kook Off,” organizers said.

• Demonstrate and film how a team would race with social distancing and precautions.

Each category will have first-, second- and third- place prizes, organizers said.

More details on how to enter or deadlines were not available on Saturday. See www.ptkineticrace.org or the Facebook page for more information.

In addition, organizers have on their Facebook page a Kinetic Kookbook and Recipe Kontest. Recipes to be judged by local chefs are due by June 15, recipes not to be judged, by Aug. 1. The recipes will go into a Kookbook that will be available Oct. 1, organizers said.
