JOYCE – When a disaster strikes, there’s a difference between knowing what to do and being in the way.
And next month, residents of Joyce will have the chance to learn what to do in case of an emergency in a volunteer training program aimed at preparing them to help themselves and their neighbors.
Training for CERT, or Community Emergency Response Team, will be held for Joyce-area residents at the Crescent Grange hall, 50870 state Highway 112, at 9 a.m. the first three Saturdays of February.
Margaret Owens, an at-large member of the Crescent Community Advisory Council, said the training would be helpful in case of a major catastrophe, such as an earthquake, that could potentially leave the rural community west of Port Angeles isolated.
“I’m not lying awake at night worrying about this, but I think preparedness of this type would be helpful in lesser emergencies,” Owens said.
