JOYCE — State Department of Natural Resources fire crews extinguished a small wildfire on Striped Peak and are continuing to monitor it through the weekend.
Crews are keeping an eye on the site, just west of Freshwater Bay, to make sure it does not flare up again.
The fire broke out Thursday night and burned about three to four acres of mostly private land on the hillside, said Charlie Cortelyou, manager for DNR’s Olympic Region.
Crews from Clallam County Fire Districts Nos. 2 and 4 initially responded to the blaze at about 8 p.m. Thursday and got it under control, but contacted DNR about 10 p.m. for assistance, Cortelyou said.
Hand crews dug a line to contain the fire, he said.
On Friday, four 10-person inmate crews from Olympic Corrections Center, three fire bosses, a large tender for water, an engine and a fire investigator worked at the site.
