JOYCE — A permanent lighted flag pole now stands at the Joyce Fire Station in memory of one of the community’s original volunteer firefighters.

The flag memorial hosted by Clallam County Fire District No. 4 last month was dedicated to Harold R. Baar, who died Jan. 18. He was 88.

As well as serving as a volunteer firefighter, Baar was a commissioner for the Joyce fire department for more than 50 years.

He was a founding member of the Crescent Water Association, holding share No. 1.

Crescent Water Association, Crescent Grange No. 1123 and the fire district supported the purchase of a permanent lighted flag pole featuring a replica fire hydrant to represent the community water, which served for both farming and firefighting.

Fire Chief Alex Baker said the hydrant and flagpole represented a fitting tribute to the man who was instrumental in bringing water and fire protection to the Joyce community.

Members of the Joyce area cleaned and repainted portions of the fire hall prior to the celebration, and a local couple who prefer to remain anonymous donated a refurbished sign for the front of the hall.

Current fire commissioners also donated a tree to be planted at the station as is the custom when a fellow commissioner dies.
