PORT ANGELES — A new idea has surfaced to bring the art deco ferry Kalakala back to Port Angeles, where it once operated and where some hope it will operate again.
Eugene Voight of Joyce is one of those trying to keep the Kalakala afloat as a convention center or performing arts venue on the Port Angeles waterfront.
And as organizers of the non-profit Kalakala Foundation seek a permanent home for the historic ferry, Voight is seeking support — and $90,000 — to bring the vessel here.
“It would be a terrible shame to allow this opportunity to be passed by,” Voight, who has lived in the area 23 years, said Saturday. “It’s just going to take the will of local people.”
Voight says he has no experience in starting non-profit organizations and is “not the person to be any kind of a spokesman” for the cause.
But he is forging ahead with plans to form a Kalakala Foundation of Port Angeles.
