Joint schools chief candidate interviewed today

Port Townsend, Chimacum schools join for superintendent search

PORT TOWNSEND — The final candidate of the joint superintendent search by the Chimacum and Port Townsend school districts will be interviewed publicly today.

Dr. Diana Royabal, executive director of elementary education for Cherry Creek School District in Colorado, will answer questions from stakeholders of both districts and participate in a public forum from 3 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. before meeting with the school boards.

The Port Townsend School Board, which conducted interviews Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, has its final interview scheduled in executive session at 6 p.m. today, while the Chimacum School Board will interview Royabal in executive session at 4 p.m. today.

Three of the four finalists are being considered separately for both districts, while the fourth is being considered only in Port Townsend.

Scott Mauk, principal at Edmonds Heights K-12 Alternative Learning Experience in the Edmonds School District, interviewed with both districts Monday, Kristie Lindholm, area senior director of the Office of School Performance in Portland Public Schools, interviewed with Port Townsend School District on Tuesday, and Linda Rosenbury, a current doctoral resident at Highline Public Schools, interviewed with both districts Wednesday.

Royabal has worked in education for more than 25 years. In her current position, she supervises the district’s elementary school principals and has worked previously as a para-educator, teacher, assistant principal and principal, according to a press release from Port Townsend School District.

Royabal has a bachelor’s degree in elementary education and teaching and a master of education in curriculum and instruction from Colorado Christian University, an education specialist degree in school administration from the University of Colorado and a doctorate in educational leadership from the University of Phoenix, according to the press release.

Each candidate has a community question-and-answer forum on Zoom between 3 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. on the day of their interview. To view the introductions, go to us02web.zoom.us and enter meeting ID 858 8653 5858.

The Port Townsend and Chimacum school boards have agreed to work collaboratively on their concurrent superintendent search processes.

The boards will meet in a joint executive session at 7:30 a.m. Saturday to discuss, and possibly act on, the superintendent finalists.

Each district will hire its own superintendent and plans to make the final decision before the end of February.
