JOHN NELSON’S LIVE MUSIC COLUMN: Relish local talent everywhere

EDITOR’S NOTE: With John Nelson off this week, PDN News Assistant Anne Sargent wrote this week’s “Live Music” column.

ONE WEEK INTO summer, and there is plenty of live music around the Peninsula to enjoy.

You can have your choice of jazz, country, classic rock, swing, blues, folk and much more.

If you are going on vacation, remember to take in live music wherever you go.

You are sure to appreciate our local talent when you return.

Port Angeles

■ Today at Castaways Restaurant and Night Club, 1213 Marine Drive, it’s Jerry’s country jam from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

On Friday, swing to the country, blues and classic rock of the Trespassers with Jim Lind, Gerald Pierce and Rudy Maxion. Get moving to the groove from 8 p.m. to midnight.

■ Today at Cafe New Day, 102 W. Front St., Dan Maguire from the Juan de Fuca band plays originals from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

On Saturday, Guardian Elephant plays unplugged alternatives at 5:30 p.m.

■ Today at Dam Bar, junction of U.S. Highway 101 and state Highway 112, Chip Norris hosts the country jam from 8 p.m. to midnight.

■ On Friday at the Fairmount Restaurant, 1127 W. U.S. Highway 101, Dave and Rosalie Secord with Luck of the Draw have Jimmy Hoffman as their guest performer from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

■ On Friday at Barhop Brewing, 124 W. Railroad Ave., BluMeadows performs ’60s and ’70s music in a Jimi Hendrix style from 7:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.

■ On Friday at Bar N9ne, 229 W. First St., Jessica Lynn hits the stage at 9 p.m. $3 cover.

■ On Tuesday at the Port Angeles Senior Center, 328 E. Seventh St., the Port Angeles Senior Swingers present Wally’s Boys playing ballroom dance favorites from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. $5 cover; first-timers free.

Sequim

■ Today at Wind Rose Cellars, 143 W. Washington St., Cort Armstrong and Jim Faddis entertain from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

On Friday, Twisted Roots trio Bob Lawrence-Markarian, Marty Kaler and Leo Bidne play Americana folk from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. No cover.

On Saturday, the Jenny Davis Jazz Trio with Chuck Easton and Ted Enderle offer up straight-ahead jazzy entertainment from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

On Wednesday, Bill Volmut showcases original tunes and covers from the 1960s and ’70s from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. No cover.

■ On Friday at The Oasis Bar and Grill, 301 E. Washington St., Gil Yslas performs from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

On Saturday, dance to Nostalgia from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

On Wednesday, the Blue Hole Quintet plays from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

■ On Saturday at the Sequim VFW, 169 E. Washington St., Round Trip plays old-time country from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. No cover; open to the public.

■ On Wednesday at Nourish, 1345 S. Sequim Ave., Victor Reventlow hosts the open mic from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., with sign-ups at 6 p.m.

Blyn

■ Today in Club Seven lounge at 7 Cedars Casino, 270756 U.S. Highway 101, dance to the romantic swing music of the ’40s and ’50s performed by the Stardust Big Band from 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

On Saturday, Gold Digger plays to the party theme of “Hollywood Nights” from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m.

On Sunday, Trail Mix, a country duo, is on the casino stage from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.

On Friday in the Rainforest Bar, Jeremy Pederson on acoustic guitar plays from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.

On Saturday, enjoy the Americana of Billy Shew from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Port Hadlock

■ On Friday at the Ajax Cafe, 21 N. Water St., Trevor Hanson plays classical guitar from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Port Ludlow

■ Today in the Fireside Room at the Resort at Port Ludlow, 1 Heron Road, Trevor Hanson plays classical guitar from 6 p.m. to closing.

Port Townsend

■ On Friday at Sirens Pub, 823 Water St., Blue Holiday, with lead vocalist Frank Anderson, George Radebaugh on piano, Randy Cole on bass and Tim Sheffel on drums, performs at 9 p.m. $5 cover.

On Sunday, native Seattleite Leanne Wilkins & the Weathered Souls perform soulful rock with a folksy, earthy flavor at 8 p.m. No cover.

■ On Friday at the Cellar Door, 940 Water St., Ava Kiser performs with the Kate Copeland Trio at 9 p.m. $5 cover.

On Saturday, Cabana is on stage at 9 p.m. $5 cover.

On Tuesday, Blue Holiday plays their jazz from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., no cover.

■ On Friday at Port Townsend Brewing, 330 10th St., the Delta Rays play original Cajun and blues by Peter Evasick and George Radebaugh in the brewery garden from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

On Saturday, the venue hosts its 17th anniversary party with two bands. Allyn and Guthrie start the party at 3:30 p.m. with heavy wood acoustic rock and blues with attitude. At 6:30 p.m., you can hear The Better Half with “throw-down, funk-infused rock ’n’ soul” for dancing until 9:30 p.m.

On Sunday, Skip Morris Jazz performs in the beer garden from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. No cover.

■ On Friday at the Pourhouse, 2231 Washington St., Blue Rooster performs in the impound lot from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

On Saturday, The High Council performs spaced-out, heavy jams from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

■ On Friday at Uptown Pub, 1016 Lawrence St., Chuck Crowe plays rock, country, folk, blues starting at 9 p.m.

On Saturday Matt Sircely performs his unique bluegrass, folk, Americana, blues, rock show at 9 p.m.

On Tuesday, the open mic starts at 8 p.m.

■ Every Monday, Trevor Hanson plays guitar at Alchemy, 842 Washington St., from 5 p.m. to9 p.m.

■ On Wednesday at the Highway 20 Road House, 2125 Sims Way, Ukuleles Unite! play a jam session from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. It’s open to play along, perform or watch.

High notes

■ On Saturday at the Port Townsend Farmers Market on Tyler Street, Toot Sweet, a local clarinet quartet with previous professional musical occupations, plays classical, pop, jazz and variety from 10 a.m. to noon.

■ On Saturday at Port Angeles Farmers Market at The Gateway, Front and Lincoln streets, Phil Hansen, acoustic guitarist, performs from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

■ On Sunday, the Soul Ducks play at the Sekiu Community Center in Clallam Bay at a free-to-the-public retirement celebration for “Postmaster Linda” from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Linda has spent 40 years working for the U.S. Postal Service.

The potluck meal starts at 2 p.m.
