JOHN NELSON’S LIVE MUSIC COLUMN: Groove to big band, jazz, country stylings

AH, SPRING! THE sun is shining, it’s getting warmer, and outdoor beer gardens are being readied to receive bands and patrons enjoying the great outdoors along with live music and a cold one.

This is the time when winter maladies leave us and cabin fever is dispelled for another year.

Music brightens our day, lightens our mood and soothes our soul.

Port Angeles

■ Today at Castaways Restaurant and Night Club, 1213 Marine Drive, Classic Country with Jim Rosand and Terry Roszatycki will get you dancing from 5 p.m. to 8:15 p.m.

On Saturday, the Jimmy Hoffman Band blends classic rock with classic and contemporary country from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m.

■ Today, the Junction Roadhouse, 242701 U.S. Highway 101, features multi-instrumentalist Ches Ferguson from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.

On Friday, get your blues fix with Blues Bentley from 8 p.m. to midnight. Cover.

■ Today at Bella Italia Restaurant, 118 E. First St., crossover guitar artist and balladeer Joachim Nordensson meshes upbeat and mellow rock with a serving of jazzy folk from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m.

■ On Friday, Les Wamboldt and Olde Tyme Country perform at the Fairmount Restaurant, 1127 W. U.S. Highway 101, with guest Terry Roszatycki from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

On Sunday, join the country jam from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

■ On Saturday, Coog’s Budget CDs, 111 W. First St., celebrates National Record Store Day with free live music by Twisted Roots at 4 p.m., followed by the Estafets, MCFD, Decapitate the Disciples, AK47, Inside Defiance and Hunt and Distinction. Food and beverages available.

■ Every Tuesday at the Port Angeles Senior Center, 328 E. Seventh St., the Port Angeles Senior Swingers present Wally and the Boys playing ballroom dance favorites from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. $5 cover; first-timers free.

■ On Friday and Saturday at Dupuis Restaurant, 256861 U.S. Highway 101, Bob and Dave play blues from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

On Saturday, Nolan Murray and Bruce Coughlan of Tillers Folly will get you started at 5:30 p.m., followed by Testify at 9 p.m.

On Friday, the Andy Madson Band comes up from Oregon to rock from 8 p.m. to midnight.

On Saturday, the Afrodisiacs bring classic “disco gold,” so dress Travolta-style for the party from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m.

On Sunday, dance to the big-band sound of the Stardust Big Band from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m.

■ Tonight, The Upstage, 923 Washington St., presents the debut of the “Barney McClure Presents” jazz series. McClure pairs with vibraphonist Susan Pascal at 7:30 p.m. $15 cover; $12 in advance.

On Friday, the Kings of Mongrel Folk (Mark Graham and Orville Johnson) perform roots, folk and blues on harmonica, guitar and vocals at 7:30 p.m. $10 cover; $8 in advance.

On Saturday, Kevin Selfe and the Tornadoes perform rocking rhythm and blues at 8 p.m. $12 cover; $10 in advance.

On Sunday, enjoy Rex Rice’s Penultimate Sunday Jazz Jam. $5 cover.

■ On Friday, Jim Nyby and the F Street Band wrap up this session of Olympic Peninsula Dance Friday at the Port Townsend Elks Lodge, 555 Otto St., from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m.

Adults, $15; students with ID and disabled, $10.

Attendance supports continuation of live band dancing. Smoke-free; all-ages; no partner needed.

There will be a free (with admission) predance lesson in samba taught by Joe Thompson and Lynette Holloway at 7 p.m.

Serendipity opens at 2 p.m., followed by Dave and Rosalie Secord and the Luck of the Draw Band at 3 p.m., with Chuck and Gene finishing out the dance at 4 p.m. No cover. Refreshments provided.

■ Port Townsend’s Buck Ellard has returned from Phoenix, where he attended the premiere of the film “Dead in 5 Heartbeats,” which features his “Goodbye Song.”

He’ll have stories to tell at his live performances.

Kudos to Ellard for bringing Northwest musicianship to the big screen.
