Scenic mountain views, meandering streams and towering forests draw people to the North Olympic Peninsula.
Those lures will entice people to come to the visitor center soon after they cross the Hood Canal Bridge onto the North Olympic Peninsula, project organizers say.
Debbie Berreth of the Jefferson County Public Works Department told the Port Townsend Chamber of Commerce on Monday that 37 acres at the corner of state Highways 104 and 19 have been purchased.
They include many environmentally sensitive areas such as wetlands that will be incorporated into the design of the Olympic Gateway Visitor Center.
Design development is still under way for the project, estimated to cost between $6 million and $8 million, Berreth chamber members at their weekly luncheon meeting at Point Hudson on Monday.
