Jefferson County residents could choose the county’s Superior Court judge and decide an Emergency Medical Services replacement levy for Fire District 6 in today’s primary election.
Neighborhood polling places are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Auditor Donna Eldridge said about 7,400 people are eligible to go to the polls today.
Mail-in ballots must be postmarked by today, or dropped off at the county courthouse in Port Townsend by 8 p.m.
Actually, the election has been under way since Aug. 25, when vote-by-mail ballots were sent to residents who have registered as permanent absentees.
As of Monday afternoon, 6,377 vote-by-mail ballots of the 12,867 send out in August had been returned to the auditor’s office.
Of that number, Eldridge said at least 5,576 would be counted tonight.
Some of the 801 mail-in ballots received Monday could also be counted tonight if they are processed in time.
Ballots received in today’s mail will be counted later in the week.
As long as they were postmarked on or before the day of the election, ballots will be counted.
If the voting is close, the races may not be decided until Friday.
