PORT TOWNSEND — Superior Court Judge Thomas J. Majhan died Sunday afternoon at Harrison Memorial Hospital in Bremerton after a brief struggle with cancer.
“It’s a tremendous loss for the court system here,” said Mel Mefford, retired Jefferson County sheriff. “He’s the fairest person I ever met.”
Majhan, 66, was diagnosed with cancer of the lungs and back in January, and was undergoing chemotherapy at Harrison.
“I knew he was failing, but he was still upbeat and still had the dry sense of humor,” Mefford said.
Born and raised in Pittsburg, Pa., Majhan was just out of the law school when he and wife, D’Anne, came to the North Olympic Peninsula in 1977, according to Harry Holloway, a friend and fellow attorney.
After a brief respite in Sequim, Majhan opened a law office off Washington Street and practiced civil law, which he continued after he was elected to a part-time position as district court judge in 1982, Holloway said.
Majhan sat on the district court bench, which became a full-time job, until 1998. In 2000, he was elected to Superior Court, succeeding Judge William Howard.
