The Jefferson County Fair doesn’t officially open until Friday, but building superintendents will be busy accepting entries for open classes starting today.
And while it may be too late to enter for some categories — knitting comes to mind — there are still several that Jefferson County residents can enter at the last minute.
For example, gardeners can bring their home-grown produce to the Agricultural Building on Wednesday from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m., and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Building superintendent Irene Denton takes everything from apples to zucchini; she’s also holding a biggest zucchini contest and a biggest sunflower contest with gift certificates as prizes.
The annual scarecrow contest — actually, a scare-deer contest — is popular with adults and children, Denton said.
This year, the soft-sculpture figures, usually made from stuffed clothing, should have some connection with the fair theme, “On the Trail with Lewis and Clark” — Native Americans, Sacajawea, Lewis, Clark, etc.
Any county resident who has done some artwork in the past two years — a painting, drawing, sculpture or photograph — can enter the fine arts/photography categories today from noon to 8 p.m.
