PORT TOWNSEND– Candidates for Jefferson County Sheriff sparred Monday in what is quickly becoming the most interesting race on the Nov. 5 general election ballot.
Police Chief Kristen Anderson-Post and Mike Brasfield, former assistant police chief in Seattle, faced off over their respective job experience, changes they’d make during the first 100 days in office and other issues during a Port Townsend Chamber of Commerce luncheon.
Democrat Brasfield also got a boost Monday when Bob Hinton — the Republican candidate for sheriff who lost to Anderson-Post in the Sept. 17 primary election — crossed party lines to endorse Brasfield, citing his “impressive resume.”
In his endorsement letter, Hinton said Brasfield’s knowledge of “jail management issues” is especially needed in light of an American Civil Liberties Union lawsuit over conditions at the Jefferson County Jail.
Hinton received 26 percent of the total vote in the primary election, while Anderson-Post captured 44 percent and Brasfield more than 26 percent.
