Jefferson PUD has clean audit for 2022

PORT TOWNSEND — Jefferson County Public Utility District #1 has received a clean audit for 2022 from the state auditor’s office.

It marked the agency’s seventh consecutive clean accountability audit, according to a PUD press release.

Auditors reviewed records from Jan. 1, 2022, through Dec. 31, 2022, using a risk-based approach to review items such as minutes from Board of Commission meetings.

They also analyzed trends in financial data such as payroll reports, vendor information and sit-downs with staff.

According to auditors, the district complies with applicable state laws, regulations and its own policies in all areas examined.

The reports also confirm that the district provides adequate controls over the safeguarding of public resources.

The auditor’s office conducts about 2,500 audits annually.

Auditors reviewed the district’s procurement processes and provided recommendations for updating internal processes during a special meeting of the district’s board of commissioners on April 2, and the commissioners approved updates to the district’s procurement manual during a special meeting on April 16.

“The audit process is a great learning opportunity for the utility,” said Mike Bailey, the district’s finance director. “It helps us improve our processes and lets us share information with the board and the public.”

District financial and audit documents as well as meeting materials are available at www.jeffpud.org.
