Jefferson PUD electrical power authority study nears

PORT HADLOCK — Jefferson County Public Utility District commissioners on Wednesday received two consultant proposals to study the feasibility of the PUD providing electrical power to much of the county.

A consultant could be selected in the next two weeks for final selection at the next PUD commissioners meeting, said General Manager Jim Parker on Wednesday during a commissioners business meeting.

D. Hittle and Associates of Lynnwood, which conducted a similar study for the PUD in 2000, and EES Consulting of Kirkland made proposals to get the contract.

Parker said copies of the proposals were forwarded to Jefferson County commissioners, Port Townsend City Council members and the Port of Port Townsend commissioners for their review and recommendations.

Parker said the study is estimated to cost PUD about $30,000, which is negotiable.

“We want to have them finish this by August,” Parker told the PUD commissioners, adding that the information derived from the study could be reviewed by voters before a November election is called on whether PUD should be granted the authority to provide electrical power to East Jefferson County north of Mount Walker instead of Puget Sound Energy.
