PORT TOWNSEND — A study is under way to determine if a 50 mph speed limit on a section of Cape George Road should be decreased to 40 mph.
Jefferson County Public Works began the study in November on the stretch of Cape George Road between Nelson’s Landing Road and Cape George Wye to determine if the speed limit is too high for the area.
The study was started in response to several complaints received from residents as well as a rollover car wreck last fall.
Although the speed limit is 50 mph, the average speed on that stretch of Cape George Road has been found to be between 51.3 and 53 mph.
Determining the proper speed limit for a section of road involves many factors.
“It seems like a pretty simple thing, but it’s not,” said Bruce Laurie, Public Works engineer services manager.
“You have to look at a lot of things.”
