PORT TOWNSEND –Police Chief Kristen Anderson announced her candidacy for Jefferson County sheriff Tuesday.
Anderson is the fourth candidate in the race to succeed Sheriff Pete Piccini, who is not expected to seek a third term in the fall elections.
Also declaring their intent to run in the Republican primary are former Port Townsend Police Chief Bob Hinton and former Spokane County Sheriff’s Detective Ted Campbell.
Michael Haas, deputy county prosecuting attorney, who announced in February, has dropped out, leaving Jefferson County Undersheriff Ken Sukert as the only candidate on the Democratic ticket.
Creating a collaborative relationship between the police and sheriff’s department is one reason she is running, Anderson said.
“In these bleak economic times, collaboration is not just a nice option,” Anderson said. “Without it, we’re not going to survive.”
