PORT HADLOCK — Area peace activists say they will ignore the convoy of about 700 Army vehicles from Naval Magazine Indian Island to Fort Lewis for 10 days starting this weekend.
Even though demonstrators picketed outside the naval installation’s gate in the weeks approaching the Iraq war earlier this year, they say they are planning no protests as the Stryker vehicles, humvees and other Army ware pass through the gate starting as early as Saturday.
The Port Townsend Peace Movement is hosting a daylong retreat on Saturday at Quimper Unitarian Church in Port Townsend, spokesman Lindsey Schromen-Wawrin said.
The retreat was planned before news of the Army’s convoy plans reached area peace groups, he said.
“There’s nothing directly planned because of (the operation),” he said.
“We’re trying to be more proactive than reactive.”
