About 400 Jefferson County electricity customers are taking an advantage of a Puget Sound Energy program to light up their homes and businesses with “green” power.
Jefferson County — Port Townsend in particular — has among the highest concentration of green-power users in the electric company’s service area, according to the Bellevue-based utility that provides juice to most of East Jefferson County.
Only more populous areas such as Olympia, Bellingham, Bellevue, Kirkland and Bainbridge Island have more.
“Port Townsend is one of the most active cities in our 6,000-square-mile service territory,” utility spokesman Tim Bader said.
$4 monthly allocation
The 311 city residents who belong to the program donate at least $4 a month on their utility bills, allowing Puget Sound Energy to buy 200 kilowatt hours of energy from renewable resources and support development of more sources.
Additional green power can be purchased by the customer.
Most of the power comes from the Stateline Wind Farm near Walla Walla or the Hanford/White Bluffs Solar Project in Hanford.
