PORT TOWNSEND — A disaster involving military ammunition being delivered or stored at Naval Magazine Indian Island is an unlikely event.
But it’s discussed among community members.
Bob Hamlin, director of Jefferson County emergency services, called the Navy “a good neighbor” during a discussion Monday about combining efforts with the city of Port Townsend to build an emergency management plan.
“The Navy is open and communicates with us,” Hamlin said.
That communication, according to Hamlin, has painted a picture of how much ammunition is being trucked into the Navy base from Subbase Bangor on the Kitsap Peninsula.
Hamlin said the Navy “has an excellent safety record,” and said that is the main reason for his confidence.
Another factor, Hamlin told county commissioners during their Monday meeting, was the quality of the Navy’s firefighting team.
