PORT ANGELES — Jefferson County is an easier place to live than Clallam County, and both counties fared better than the national average in a livability analysis by The New York Times.
The Times used household income, education, unemployment, disability, life expectancy and obesity to rank 3,135 counties nationwide.
Jefferson County ranked 727th and Clallam County was 1,320th.
While the data were similar in most respects, Jefferson County scored better than Clallam in all six categories.
Here are the numbers:
■ Median income — Jefferson, $46,870; Clallam, $46,431.
■ College education (at least a bachelor’s degree) — Jefferson, 35.3 percent; Clallam, 24.6 percent.
■ Disability — Jefferson, 1.2 percent; Clallam, 1.7 percent.
■ Life expectancy — Jefferson, 80.2 years; Clallam, 78.4 years.
■ Obesity — Jefferson, 31 percent; Clallam, 34 percent.
■ Unemployment [averaged] — Jefferson, 9.4 percent; Clallam, 9.9 percent.
The state Employment Security Department estimates that unemployment remained at 6.5 percent in Jefferson County and went from 6.7 percent to 6.9 percent in Clallam County in July.
