PORT TOWNSEND — Larry Scott’s memory continues to grow across Jefferson County.
Jefferson County Public Works opened a new, 2,000-foot section of the Larry Scott Memorial Trail this week, and is inviting people to take a walk a little farther down the road.
The new section of trail extends south from the end of South Edwards Road and replaces an informal path which previously meandered through the area.
It is accessible from the original trail by following the signs and continuing south on the expanding trail.
The Larry Scott Trail can now be used for a total of six miles from the trailhead at the Boat Haven in Port Townsend to Discovery Road near the Discovery Bay Golf Club property.
A few sections are still narrow, informal paths built by the Jefferson Trails Coalition.
Those will be upgraded to become wheelchair-accessible as grant funding is secured.
“We’re grateful for the county funds to do this,” said Linda Carson, a member of the Jefferson Trails Association.
“This is a multiuse trail for everyone and we are happy to have it.”
The state Recreation and Conservation Office provided grant funding for the project.
The remaining funding is from the County Road Fund.
The expected cost to complete the work on the trail is $1.18 million. About half of that being secured so far.
