Jefferson County Preparedness Day slated Saturday

CHIMACUM — The Production Alliance will present Jefferson County Preparedness Day from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

The free festival will be at Finnriver Farm and Cidery, 124 Center Road, Chimacum.

The event is designed to build a more resilient community through education and hands-on emergency preparedness training.

Individuals, families and businesses will be able to learn practical emergency preparedness skills, meet and engage with emergency response teams, discover resources to help plan for a variety of disaster scenarios and have fun while taking steps toward readiness.

“All County Preparedness Day is more than just an event, it’s an opportunity to empower our community with the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to handle emergencies,” said Willie Bence, director of the county’s Department of Emergency Management. “We want preparedness to be approachable, engaging and something the whole family can take part in.”

Jefferson County Public Health will host a lower-sensory, quieter, less-crowded welcoming space for those with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families in the morning.

The booth will provide an opportunity for in-depth conversations with service providers and to pick up a specialized emergency go bag.

From 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., there will be workshops on emergency mindset, skill-building and community networking as well as speakers and expert panels.

At 11:30 a.m., there will be a live emergency simulation.

From noon to 4 p.m., there will be hands-on skill stations and demonstrations, community resource booths, a Kids Preparedness Zone featuring an obstacle course hosted by East Jefferson Fire Rescue and bounce units provided by Sugar Hill Farms, emergency training sessions in the Hay Barn at 12:30 p.m., 1:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m., and family-friendly challenges a tug-of-war and a water brigade.
