PORT TOWNSEND — Jefferson County is taking another shot at repairing the grandstand roof at Memorial Field.
County commissioners issued a new request for bids on Monday.
Public Works Director Monte Reinders said he’s looking for contractors to replace the roof and repair the frame.
He hopes the bids come in at $300,000 to $350,000.
The bids will be opened on Nov. 3.
City of Port Townsend officials closed the grandstand last May, citing concerns with the roof expressed by Port Angeles Engineer Scott Headrick.
After inspecting the grandstand, Headrick recommended its condemnation because of “degradation in the majority of structural members due to exposure to the salt air, rain water and lack of maintenance.”
The facility has since operated with rented portable grandstands.
An earlier request for bids resulted in two bids that both exceeded the county’s projected budget for the repairs.
Reinders said the county then hired KPFF Consulting Engineers, a Seattle engineering firm, to conduct a further inspection and help prepare the scope of work.
The entire budget for the project is approximately $400,000.
Reinders said county staff will provide some of the needed work.
Reinders said the county has $160,000 in Proposition 1 funds to put toward the project, with the rest to be drawn from the general fund.
