PORT HADLOCK — The Jefferson County Library will host the traveling exhibit “Discover Exoplanets: The Search for Alien Earths” from Thursday through Oct. 18.
The exhibit will be on display at the library located at 620 Cedar Ave.
Developed by the Space Science Institute’s National Center for Interactive Learning, the exhibit is co-sponsored by the Washington State University Jefferson County Extension.
Exoplanets are defined as planets that orbit stars outside the solar system.
In conjunction with the exhibit, the library also will host presentations by Jay Bakst and Dave Fong.
Bakst, a long-time amateur astronomer, will present “Cosmic Distance Ladders: How Far are the Stars and How Do We Know?” from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 7.
He will explore the science involved, and the techniques used, to calculate the distances to celestial objects and the expansion rate of the universe.
David Fong will present “The Search for Habitable Exoplanets” from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Aug. 15.
Fong, a Smithsonian research fellow, will discuss the discovery of nearly 4,000 exoplanets.
