Jefferson County Library replacing its 32-year-old roof

PORT HADLOCK — The Jefferson County Library is getting a new roof to replace one from 1985.

The taller sloped sections of the roof have been completely replaced. Work is currently halted on the flat portion of the roof while the crew works on other projects.

Work will resume within the next two weeks when the crew returns, said Meredith Wagner, director of the library at 620 Cedar Ave. in Port Hadlock.

“We’re on hiatus right now, thankfully,” Wagner said. “It’s been really loud.”

The library will remain open during construction when it recommences in the next two weeks.

The $120,000 project began May 2 with crews tearing off the old roof and installing new asphalt shingles, Wagner said.

That portion of the project was completed in about three days.

“There was a lot of noise,” Wager said, “but the public and the staff had a great attitude and appreciated the earplugs that were provided by the Friends of Jefferson County Library.”

Shingles were removed from the flat section of the roof, and primer and base coat were applied while work was being done on the sections of sloped roof.

Wagner said when the crew returns, it will put one more coat on the flat section of the roof and replace the skylights.

The roof, especially the flat section, was overdue for a replacement, Wagner said; the flat section of the roof had been cracking and peeling, and the frames around the skylights were pulling apart.

The project is funded by the library’s district reserve fund, which is held specifically for building needs.

The library board hired Garland/DBS Inc. for the roof repair and restoration. Garland contracted with The Roof Doctor of Bremerton for on-site management and project oversight.

“We are very pleased with the work,” Wagner said. “The crew has done an excellent job to work safely and efficiently to minimize the impact on service to the public.”
