A continuing decline in the growth of sales tax revenue and other county income means Jefferson County will continue to tighten its fiscal 2003 budget belt.
Preliminary budget figures place next year’s general fund budget at $11.47 million — about $600,000 less than this year’s initial budget.
The current budget was slashed during mid-year cuts that took effect July 1.
Commissioners approved a series of budget objectives and goals Monday that call for departments to work within spending limits, rather than the county automatically filling holes left by cuts in states and federal funding.
That could mean a loss of some programs and a greater emphasis on fees to support county departments, Deputy County Administrator Gary Rowe said.
