SEQUIM — Indivisible Sequim will join the League of Women Voters of Jefferson County and other organizations across the country in hosting a vigil on the one-year anniversary of the Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol.
The Vigil for Democracy: We the People — Jan. 6 Day of Remembrance and Action will be from 11:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. today at the corner of Sequim Avenue and Washington Street.
Participants are urged to brings signs and wear face masks against COVID-19.
The League of Women Voters-Jefferson County will host a half-hour candlelight vigil at 4:30 p.m. today at Pope Marine Park on Water Street at Madison Street.
The vigil is to remember the law enforcement officers killed or wounded on duty at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, said Angela Gyurko, the League chapter’s president.
Participants are urged to bring LED candles, along with wearing face masks, or if they do not attend, to place candles in their windows throughout the day and evening to show support for voting rights.
Gyurko will offer brief remarks, and the rest of the time will be spent in silence.
Any signs brought to the event should reflect respect for democracy and the right to vote, Gyurko said.
MoveOn — one of the nationwide Jan. 6 vigil organizers along with Indivisible, Common Cause, League of Women Voters and others — said that more than 200 events were planned across the country “to ensure that our country and our elected officials understand that overturning the will of the people in our elections is not acceptable and that we demand protections to ensure it is never successful.”
