A two-phase, $2.2 million proposed remodeling of the Clallam County jail in Port Angeles could get Clallam County commissioners’ consideration as early as next week.
Commissioners met with county and city law-enforcement representatives Monday to review a presentation by Spokane architect Bob Glass.
Glass’s entire plan includes five phases at a cost of $20.4 million.
Only the $500,000 Phase 1 — already funded — and a $1.7 million Phase 2 are likely to receive the commissioners’ consideration this year.
Phase 2 is optional now but will be necessary for any subsequent expansion of the jail, said Glass.
He said the county would save money by completing the second stage soon.
County Administrator Dan Engelbertson, a former undersheriff, agreed.
Adding 30 beds
The first part of the project is to remodel a currently closed special detention unit into a 10-bed dormitory for women and a 20-bed dorm for men.
The second stage would add 31 short-stay cells. Its main purpose, however, would be to streamline booking and intake and to centralize property storage, laundry and a loading dock.
The addition would occupy what presently is a parking lot.
Phase 3 ($8.8 million) would add 96 more beds on two tiers, plus an expanded medical facility and food-service area.
Phase 4 ($7 million) would include new jail administration offices, a lobby and 24 beds.
Phase 5 ($2.5 million) would provide 24 more beds for a total of 210, plus a new holding area for inmates awaiting court appearances.
