PORT ANGELES — The Clallam County Sheriff’s Department will assume animal control duties April 1, leaving the care of the creatures it captures to the Humane Society.
County commissioners gave their approval to the Clallam County Humane Society’s choice not to renew the animal control contract it has held since 2004.
Sheriff Bill Benedict said he concurred in the change that he said he had discussed with Scott Chandler, the society’s executive director, and with Rick Collord, Chandler’s predecessor.
Although they were not the prime reason for the switch, Benedict said the change “was highlighted by a few incidents in which the Animal Control Officers had some difficulty.”
He said those included Chandler’s seizing 122 sheep and lambs that had been wandering in the Carlsborg area Feb. 5.
The animals were returned to their owner several days later.
