SEQUIM — The Sequim Irrigation Festival’s board of directors has announced its logo and storyline for the festival’s 123rd year, set to run May 4-13.
Next year’s tagline is “123 Come to Sequim with Me,” with its logo designed by Laura Friedkin centered on the Olympic Mountains and Sequim’s popular grain elevator.
The festival’s story by Shenna Younger takes readers to the Sequim area’s many landmarks including the Dungeness Spit, Dungeness River and John Wayne Marina.
Organizers of the festival say it celebrates the work that D.R. “Crazy” Callen and his partners did to design and develop the irrigation ditches that brought water from the Dungeness River to the parched prairie.
The first headgate on the Dungeness River was lifted May 1, 1895, and a year later, the first celebration took place at Callen’s farm, becoming the oldest continuing festival in Washington.
