EAGLEMOUNT — Washington State Patrol is continuing its investigation into possible causes of a car-bus collision involving a Port Townsend School District vehicle containing five students that occurred about 4:15 p.m. Monday.
The bus was stopped on state Highway 20 with its lights flashing, preparing to drop off a Mountain View Elementary School student north of Madrona Beach Road, when a late-model Chevrolet driven by Shanna Lewis, 20, of Port Townsend smashed into the rear left corner of the bus.
No injuries occurred, but the bus driver, students and Lewis were visibly shaken.
Lewis told state troopers that she experienced vision problems stemming from medication she takes, said Trooper Joe Leibrecht.
State troopers would not disclose the medication Lewis takes or the purpose of the medication, but said Jefferson County Mental Health is being contacted to verify the prescriptions.
The crash blocked traffic on Highway 20 for almost an hour.
Parents of the children aboard the bus were called by school authorities as soon as the bus driver could provide a list of students” names.
All the students were picked up by their parents at the scene.
According to state law, vehicles must stop when they meet any school bus which has stopped in an undivided roadway to pick up or drop off school children.
According to Leibrecht, no citations have been issued in connection with the incident.
