In mutation of classic and modern, circus sideshow planned Thursday in Port Townsend

PORT TOWNSEND — The Hilltop Tavern will host the Squidling Bros., a Philadelphia-based circus sideshow act, and the Caravan of Creeps on Thursday night for a free show.

Squidling Bros. recently performed in Tokyo and joined forces with the Caravan of Creeps on a whirlwind tour of the Pacific Northwest, from Vancouver, B.C., to the Bay Area, in a two-week span.

The Caravan of Creeps and Freaks is passing through Port Townsend on its way south and will be at the Hilltop Tavern, 2510 West Sims Way, for one night. The performance runs Thursday night from 8 to midnight.

The show is very different from the tavern’s usual entertainment, which includes weekly bingo nights, honky-tonks and painting parties.

The Squidling Bros. show includes performers such as Jelly Boy the Clown; Fibi Eyewalker, a fire and sword swallower; Damien Kenny, a juggler and “suspension practitioner,” which means he hangs things from piercings in his skin; and Bloody Betty, a Vancouver-based performance artist, according to a news release from the Squidling Bros.

The Squidling Brothers was founded by Jelly Boy, “a clown of danger and science,” and Matterz Squidling, “the impenetrable music man,” according to the news release.

“Combining their feats of wonder, skill and comedy, the show gives audiences a fast-paced, high-risk, unforgettable experience,” the release said.

“Taking from the American Carnival and Theatre of the Absurd traditions, The Squidling Brothers have mutated the classic and the modern to create a style all their own.”

Jelly Boy the Clown and Matterz Squidling are also known nationally after being featured on the television programs AMC’s “Freakshow” and the Science Channel’s “Oddities: San Francisco.”

The show at the Hilltop on Thursday will have no cover and, because it is a tavern, only people 21 and older will be allowed.
