In honor of Father’s Day, today’s Sunday Showcase features profiles of three of the thousands of special fathers across the North Olympic Peninsula — here is a glimpse of one of the profiles.

He had lofty aspirations to return to England and join the military.

But for George P. Wood of Port Angeles, raising two girls and three boys has brought joy, challenges and a fullness to his life that he wouldn’t trade for anything.

“You have to work at being a good father,” Wood, 89, said last week as Father’s Day approached.

“I have enjoyed it and have become good friends with my children as they’ve gotten older.”
